When a picture is better than a PDF
A PDF is the right format for documents, but sometimes you need an image. A form may accept only JPG files. You may want to send one page in a chat app, put a page into a slide, or post a certificate as a picture. In all these cases a JPG of the page is the simplest answer.
How to convert with Velfile
- Open PDF to JPG and choose your PDF.
- Leave the Pages box empty to convert everything, or type a range such as 1-3, 5 to convert only those pages.
- Choose an image quality: Small file, Standard or High detail.
- Press Convert to JPG. Download each page one by one, or take all of them as one ZIP file.
The conversion runs in your browser. Your PDF is not sent to a server, which is useful when the document is private.
Which quality should you choose
High detail keeps more sharpness and is best for pages with small text, tables or fine drawings, but the files are bigger. Standard is a good balance for most uses. Small file is enough for a quick preview or a chat message. If you are not sure, start with Standard and look at the result. You can always convert again with another setting.
What to know about the result
- Each page becomes a picture of the page. The text inside can no longer be selected, copied or searched.
- The longest side of each image is capped at 4000 pixels, which is plenty for screens and for normal printing.
- You can convert up to 50 pages per run, and the file can be up to 100 MB. For a longer PDF, convert one range at a time or split it first with Split PDF.
- A PDF locked with a password cannot be read. Remove the password first, if you are allowed to.
If you only need the text
Converting to images is not the right tool when you want the words. In that case copy the text from the PDF itself. Pictures of text are bigger, harder to search and not friendly to screen readers.
If the images are too big for an upload
High detail pages can be a few megabytes each. If a form has a size limit, run the images through Compress image to bring them under it, or convert again with a lower quality. For a tight limit such as 200 KB, see our guide on compressing a photo to 100 KB or 200 KB.
Going back to PDF
Later you may want to join the pictures into one document again. JPG to PDF turns images into pages of a PDF, in the order you choose.
A real example
An online form asks for a photo of your certificate in JPG, but you only have a PDF. Open PDF to JPG, type the page number of the certificate in the Pages box, and choose Standard. Download the picture and check that names and dates are readable. If the form has a size limit, compress the image afterwards. This takes less than a minute, and you do not need to install software.
Common mistakes
- Converting the whole PDF when you need one page. Type the page number so you save time and space.
- Using Small file for pages with small text. Choose Standard or High detail so the words stay readable.
- Expecting to copy the text afterwards. A JPG is a picture, so the text can no longer be selected.
- Ignoring the size limit of the upload form. Check the size of each image before you upload.
