What a watermark on a photo is for
A watermark is a small mark, such as your name or logo, placed on a picture. People use it on photos they sell or post online, to show who made the photo and to discourage casual copying. It is also useful on photos of documents, to show what they were shared for.
Text or logo
- Text. Type a name or a short line, for example © Your name. Choose white on dark photos and black on light ones. A thin outline keeps the text readable on mixed backgrounds.
- Logo. Use a PNG with a see-through background, so no white box appears around it. JPG, PNG and WEBP images are accepted.
How to do it with Velfile
- Open Watermark Photo and choose your photo (JPG, PNG or WEBP, up to 50 MB).
- Under Watermark type, choose Text and type your text, or choose Logo image and press Choose logo.
- Pick a style: Centre, Repeat or Corner.
- Move Size, Strength and Angle until the mark looks right.
- Check the preview, then press Download.
The watermark is drawn onto the picture and saved as a new file. Your original is not changed. Everything happens in your browser, and the photo is not uploaded.
Which style to choose
- Repeat covers the whole photo, so it is the hardest to crop out. Choose it for photos you want to protect.
- Centre gives a clear stamp, such as SAMPLE.
- Corner is the least distracting. It suits a small signature.
Keep the photo easy to look at
Keep Strength around 30 to 50 percent. The mark stays visible and the photo stays pleasant to look at. If the text is hard to read, try the other colour, switch on the thin outline, or make the mark a little bigger.
A watermark is not a lock
A watermark discourages casual copying, but it is not tamper-proof. Someone with a photo editor may be able to remove it, especially a small one in a corner. Keep an original copy without the watermark, because the mark becomes part of the picture once you download it.
After you add it
The picture keeps its size. For JPG and WebP the file is saved again at high quality, so tiny differences are possible. Choose PNG if you want no loss. The new file does not carry the camera details of the original, such as the location. If the file is too large for an upload form, shrink it with Compress Image. To clear hidden details from other photos, use Remove Photo Metadata.
